The pygtk tutorials seem to use a single class per window or dialog and then signal_autoconnect(dict) to wire up the signals with the handlers, which are methods. What is normally done with larger applications? For instance if I have a main window with a menu, a few treeviews, and an area for plotting a graph should I just make a lot of methods to a single application class or should I partition the handler methods among different classes (like for each listview, the graph, etc.). In reality, the methods just become function pointers than are passed to signal_autoconnect, so I'm not sure it matters, but what is the "usual" convention?

Hi Greg,

Good question, it's something that I've struggled with when programming with PyGTK and Glade. When I'm using other programming languages I'd usually subclass controls if they were doing a "specific" enough task. So if it was a tree control that interacted with a database instead of working with the database through the parent window I would create a Database-Tree-Control. But with Python and PyGTK I'm less sure what the most proper way to do things is.

If you are using a lot of different controls that are performing a lot of their own processing, I would probably move the event handlers and processing code into separate classes just to make the code easier to work with and maintain.

Thanks. It does help me feel better about not being sure! I'm just starting and had the instinct to start subclassing widgets.

What I started playing with is something like


class MyApp:
    def __init__(self):
        self.gladefile = "myapp.glade"  
        self.wTree = gtk.glade.XML(self.gladefile)

        self.wTree.signal_autoconnect(self)  # can pass instances as of pygtk 1.99.15 per pygtk FAQ

        self.mywidget = MyWidgetClass(self.wTree.get_widget("widget"))
        self.wTree.signal_autoconnect(self.mywidget)

class MyWidgetClass:
    def __init__(self,widget):
        self.widget = widget
        ...

    def handler1(self,widget):
        ...

It might be better to have each class hold it's own widget tree though instead of just its widget and do the connecting there. I'm not sure.

Interesting approach, I think that for some larger widgets (like a TreeView or ListView) using a method similar to the one you use would make a lot of sense.
